The Kansas City Royals on Sunday named Matt Quatraro as their next manager.
Quatraro has spent the last four seasons as bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays. Before that he served as Tampa Bay’s third base coach in 2018. The Rays made the World Series in 2020.
Before joining the Rays, Quatraro served as assistant hitting coach in Cleveland from 2014-17. Cleveland made the World Series in 2016. Quatraro’s time in Cleveland overlaps with Royals owner John Sherman, who was a minority owner of the franchise at the time.
Quatraro replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired earlier this month after the team went 65-97. The Royals are hoping Quatraro’s experience coaching in small markets will give the franchise a boost as it looks to rebuild with a core of young players, including Bobby Witt, Jr., MJ Melendez, Vinnie Pasquantino and Brady Singer.
