After reaggravating an injury to the most famous ankle in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got even better when his team needed him the most.
Mahomes threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns and rallied the Chiefs to a 38-35 win against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz., giving the Chiefs their second Super Bowl title in four years. Harrison Butker kicked the game-winning 27-yard field goal with just eight seconds to go to give the Chiefs their third Super Bowl title in team history.
Mahomes earned his second Super Bowl MVP and became the first player since Kurt Warner in the 1999 season to win both NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season. After reinjuring his ankle late in the second quarter, Mahomes went to the sideline and was grimacing in pain. However, after the lengthy halftime show, Mahomes came out firing on all cylinders.
“I felt really good until I reaggravated it a bit,” Mahomes said of his ankle. “But you’re in the Super Bowl. You can worry about getting it healthy in the offseason. And I was able to plow through, and we were able to win the game.”
The Chiefs trailed 24-14 at halftime, but Mahomes completed 13 of 14 passes for 93 yards and two crucial touchdowns in the second half. Mahomes also rushed for 44 yards in the game, including a 26-yarder, that put the Chiefs in scoring position with just over 2 minutes to go in the fourth, setting up Butker’s game-winner.
In the fourth quarter, Mahomes also threw touchdown passes to Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore — two players who weren’t on the team last year. Toney’s 65-yard punt return set up Mahomes’ 4-yard TD pass to Moore that made it 35-27 Chiefs.
But after Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ran for another touchdown and scored the two-point conversion to tie the game, Mahomes’ magic showed up again. He completed passes to JuJu Smith-Schuster and Travis Kelce on the drive and scrambled for the 26-yard gain, willing the Chiefs to victory when it didn’t always look pretty.
“He’s the toughest son of a gun you’ve ever met,” said Kelce, who caught six passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. “That Texas gunslinger ain’t going to let nothing get in the way.”
When the season began, many doubted the Chiefs would win the AFC West let alone be the last team standing in the NFL as Mahomes had nearly a whole new receiving corps. But he had arguably the best season of his career and capped it off with the team’s second Super Bowl title under coach Andy Reid.
“I told him I love him,” Reid said of Mahomes. “I’m proud of him for leading the way there. And this started all the way back in the preseason and the offseason program. He’s a humble kid and he works his tail off. And as a coach you respect it, and you respect everything that he does there.”
Mahomes now joins the likes of Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Eli Manning, Terry Bradshaw and Bart Starr as the only players to win multiple Super Bowl MVPs. And Reid becomes just the 14th coach in league history to have multiple Super Bowl wins. But Mahomes said as long as Reid is coaching the Chiefs, they plan on adding to that number.
“He’s one of the greatest coaches of all time,” Mahomes said. “I think everybody knew that, but I think these last two Super Bowls cemented that. And to have someone who is such a great person and gets the best out of the players, and gets them to become men and players, you want him to do that.
“You want to win those Super Bowls for him. And it’s great that we did that, and we’re not done. We’re going to have him around for a little bit longer, at least.”
