Kadarius Toney’s lack of playing time recently has been a cause for concern for Kansas City Chiefs fans. But coach Andy Reid said the team is simply being cautious with the wide receiver since Toney had knee surgery over the summer.

“We’re taking it easy with him up to this point and just making sure he can make it through the year in good health,” Reid said Monday as the Chiefs returned from their bye week.

In the three games prior to the bye, Toney played just 13, 12 and seven snaps. But Reid said he’s hopeful Toney’s participation should increase going forward.

“We can play him more than that and still be OK,” Reid said. “And then we just keep an eye on his leg and make sure we’re repping that out the right way and let him keep progressing as we go here throughout the year. That’s the important part.”

Toney suffered a torn meniscus early in training camp and missed the entire preseason. Still, Toney has played in all nine games this season and has caught 20 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. His best game this season came in Week 2 against the Jaguars when he caught five passes for 35 yards.

Last year with the Chiefs, Toney played in seven games during the regular season and caught 14 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. In the playoffs last year, Toney caught seven passes for 50 yards and scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.

The Chiefs will play the Eagles next Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
