LAWRENCE — The Kansas football team will bring back its black jerseys for Friday’s 6 p.m. game against UNLV.

KU coach Lance Leipold had been looking ahead at the schedule and possible uniform combinations, and he asked senior running back Devin Neal for his thoughts. Neal suggested the team wear the “Blackhawk” jerseys this week, and Leipold liked the idea.

On Monday, KU declared the game a “blackout” with the first 10,000 fans at Children’s Mercy Park getting free black T-shirts.

“Friday the 13th, blacked out. That’s the only way to go,” said KU wide receiver Lawrence Arnold, who had 132 yards receiving and caught three touchdowns against UNLV last year in the bowl game.

The Jayhawks wore the black uniforms twice last season — a home win against Illinois and a home loss to Kansas State. Safety Marvin Grant the black jerseys are his favorite to wear, and he’s excited to do so again.

“It’s something that Kansas hadn’t seen in a long time until we brought them out last year,” Grant said. “And everybody’s looking forward to getting back in those jerseys. We had a lot of fun in those jerseys last year and we’re looking forward to doing the same thing this year.”

In the season opener, the Jayhawks wore their alternate powder blue uniforms and have yet to wear their more traditional blue uniforms. They could wear those in one of the upcoming games at Arrowhead Stadium, but also figure to wear their alternate crimson jerseys there as well.
