Injuries still concerning for Lance Leipold, Jayhawks

LAWRENCE — As much as anything, the Kansas football team hoped to use the bye week to get healthy. But coach Lance Leipold said the team’s injury situation is still cause for concern.

“Right now, to be truthful, we’ve still got a lot of guys that are questionable,” Leipold said Monday at his weekly press conference. “Working through it. We’ll have to see where it takes us. A few guys are getting a little better, but we have a lot of guys in the questionable area.”

KU (1-5) will play Houston (2-4) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium hoping to start the second half of the season the way it started the first — with a win. But injuries at key positions have left the Jayhawks in a difficult situation.

Middle linebacker Cornell Wheeler hasn’t played since the West Virginia game, and starting cornerback Cobee Bryant injured his leg against Arizona State. Also in the secondary, Devin Dye, Jalen Dye and Mason Ellis have missed time as well.

When asked if Wheeler could play this weekend, Leipold wasn’t optimistic.

“He’s probably one of the doubtful ones,” Leipold said.

When asked if Bryant might be available, Leipold didn’t have much better news.

“He’s probably highly questionable at this time,” Leipold said. “He’s doing a little bit but hasn’t taken any team reps in over a week.”
