Justin Reid up to speed on Chiefs-Raiders rivalry

Kansas City safety Justin Reid is in his first year with the Chiefs, but he is already quite knowledgeable about the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry.

“I’ve been keeping up,” Reid said Friday. “I know that we have the Chiefs flag underneath the Vegas Stadium when that was being built. I know that this rivalry goes back decades. It’s been back and forth, and I know for the city of Kansas City, and also Oakland and Las Vegas, wherever the Raiders have been the last couple years, it means a lot to both organizations.”

The Chiefs blew out the Raiders twice last season and have won three in a row in the series. They’ll be looking for more when they meet again Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. The last time the Raiders defeated the Chiefs was in October 2020 at Arrowhead. The Raiders team bus then took a victory lap around the stadium.

The Chiefs are hoping that won’t happen Monday, but to do that Reid said they’ll have to slow down the Raiders offense, most notably wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams, the Raiders’ prize offseason acquisition, has 26 catches for 290 yards and three touchdowns through four games. Adams was acquired in the offseason in a trade with the Packers to give Raiders quarterback Derek Carr a true No. 1 receiver.

“He’s definitely a game-wrecker type of player,” Reid said of Adams. “You need to know where he is, at all times, whether he’s lined up at one or two or in the backfield. Wherever he is, every single play we need to ID where he’s at.”

The Chiefs (3-1) also will look to contain tight end Darren Waller and running back Josh Jacobs, who rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win against the Broncos.

“The Raiders are not lacking in talent,” Reid said. “They’re piecing themselves together, and this is a big week for them, too. So we’re expecting their best shot.”

CHIEFS SIGN WR CONLEY TO PRACTICE SQUAD

The Chiefs have signed wide receiver Chris Conley to their practice squad. Conley, who played for the Chiefs from 2015-18, spent two seasons with Jacksonville and parts of two seasons in Houston before being released from the practice squad Wednesday.

During his first tenure with the Chiefs, Conley had 104 receptions for 1,238 yards and six touchdowns. In his final season with the Chiefs in 2018, he had 32 catches for 334 yards and five touchdowns — with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.
