KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are used to picking near the end of the first round of the NFL Draft.

They’re not as accustomed to picking in the top 10, however, as five Super Bowl appearances and three championships have kept them out of that upper tier of talent since they drafted Patrick Mahomes with the 10th pick in 2017.

Next week, the Chiefs have the ninth pick in the first round as a result of their 6-11 record last year, and the 29th pick in the first round with the Trent McDuffie trade to the Rams.

“We’re looking forward to next week and using this as an exciting opportunity to add some talent to this team and hopefully get us back in the playoffs and hopefully another title run,” Veach said Thursday.

The Chiefs need help across the board, but offensive tackle, edge rusher and defensive back are likely priorities. Veach said offensive tackle has depth early but not for long.

“There is talent there, but I think by 35 it could be slim pickings,” Veach said.

The Chiefs have nine picks overall, and Veach said they have about 215 players on their draft board.
