KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes turned 30 earlier this month, but he had a turn-back-the-clock performance Sunday.
Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers, and the Kansas City Chiefs cruised past the Baltimore Ravens 37-20 at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes’ performance was aided by the return of wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who had been out since the season opener with a shoulder injury.
Worthy caught five passes for 83 yards and ran twice for 38 yards, igniting an offense that had been slowed all season.
“He’s just so explosive,” Mahomes said of Worthy. “You can see it when you get the ball in his hands. It just makes the defenses have to adjust. And when they adjust, he gets so much attention on him other guys can make plays happen. And just having him out there mentally, and for his physical ability, and the morale of the room I thought was huge.”
Mahomes completed 25 of 37 passes for 270 yards and threw touchdowns to JuJu Smith-Schuster, Isiah Pacheco, Hollywood Brown and Tyquan Thornton. The Chiefs offense took advantage of a Ravens team that was decimated by injuries, playing without seven starters by the fourth quarter. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson also left in the second half with a hamstring injury.
Jackson led the Ravens to a touchdown on their opening drive, but they did little after that until scoring on their final drive of the game. The Chiefs led 20-10 at halftime, and by game’s end Mahomes had thrown his 250th career touchdown, becoming the youngest player in NFL history to do so.
“It’s phenomenal,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “That’s incredible. Whatever you write good about him, he deserves, man. Give him everything. That joker is unbelievable. We’re lucky to have him.”
Mahomes entered the game as the Chiefs’ leading rusher, but Pacheco rushed for 35 and Kareem Hunt 34 as the Chiefs gained 118 yards on the ground. After losing their first two games, the Chiefs have bounced back and won two straight.
“We’ve been making little mistakes here and there and that causes frustration, but at the same time we’ve been learning from them, and we’ll learn from this game,” Mahomes said. “I’ve been proud of the guys how they’ve responded and wanted to be even better every single week.”
