One play into the preseason, the Chiefs wide receiver depth took a hit as Hollywood Brown went down with a shoulder injury.
Brown caught a pass from Patrick Mahomes and landed on his left shoulder when he was tackled. Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury that sent him to the locker room and ultimately the hospital, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said following his team’s 26-13 loss Saturday at Jacksonville.
“I think he’ll miss some time,” Reid said. “We’ll just see where it’s at. We’re kind of going through it right now. We’ll know more later on.”
The injury is the same injury former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill suffered in 2019, which also came against the Jaguars. That, however, happened during the regular season, and Hill missed four games. So it’s likely Brown will be out for the remainder of the preseason and his availability for the regular season opener Sept. 5 against the Ravens is up in the air at this point.
Brown was one of the team’s biggest free-agent signings in the offseason. The Chiefs are hoping Brown and first-round pick Xavier Worthy can improve the team’s wide receiver play, which was a disappointment last season.
Last year with the Cardinals Brown caught 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns.
