KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs placed linebacker Leo Chenal on injured reserve Saturday with a shoulder injury.
Chenal was injured during last week’s loss to the Chargers. Chenal played in 14 games this season and had 58 tackles, two sacks and an interception. Chenal was picked in the third round of the 2022 draft out of Wisconsin.
Chenal isn’t under contract for next season and could leave as a free agent if the Chiefs don’t re-sign him. Chenal has played in 65 games (44 starts) and has 218 tackles and seven sacks in his career with the Chiefs.
While Chenal has been a solid player, the chances of him re-signing with the Chiefs seem slim considering they re-signed Nick Bolton to a three-year, $45-millon deal last year and have Dru Tranquill signed for next year as well. And having three big contracts at the linebacker position seems unlikely for a team that has needs at running back, defensive line and in the secondary to name a few.
