Though he played only one series, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made the most of it.
Mahomes threw for 60 yards and added a touchdown pass in the team’s preseason opener then watched from the sidelines as the Bears backups rallied to defeat the Chiefs 19-14 Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago.
“We did what we were supposed to do,” Mahomes said. “We went out there to spread the football around, get a lot of different guys involved and found a way to get in the end zone.
“That’s what our goal was to come out here and score a touchdown and we did that. So, it was definitely a good day and something we can build on.”
Mahomes completed 6 of 7 passes and capped the Chiefs’ first drive off with a five-yard touchdown pass to Blake Bell on a tight end screen. Mahomes’ only incompletion came just prior to the touchdown pass when Marquez Valdes-Scantling got a step on a defender and Mahomes’ arm got hit as he threw.
“On that, his arm got hit or it would’ve been a touchdown,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But he was on it. And I thought he did some good things. Tried to throw the ball a little bit with him, came out throwing first couple plays.”
Travis Kelce had one catch for 19 yards and Valdes-Scantling added another for 11 yards. All six of Mahomes’ completions went to different receivers, and he said that variety could continue in the regular season.
“I think it’s going to be hard for teams to gameplan against,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, Travis is probably going to have a lot of catches, that’s just who he is he is.
“But other than that, I think it’ll come from the whole group, and I think the guys have embraced that and know that whenever their number does get called, they’re going to make a play. And if the other guy has to make the play, they’re going to be happy for them and that’s what you want on the team.”
