The Kansas City Chiefs on Monday announced plans to move the team across state lines and relocate to Kansas in 2031.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt made the announcement following approval from a Kansas Legislature committee. The Chiefs will play in a new domed stadium at the Kansas Speedway, leaving Arrowhead Stadium, where the team has played since 1972.

The $3 billion project will also include an entertainment/mixed-use district near the stadium and the Chiefs will also make their new headquarters and build a practice facility in Olathe.

“Today we are excited to take another momentous step for the future of the franchise,” Hunt said in a statement.

The Chiefs were lured across the state line in part with STAR (Sales Tax and Revenue) Bonds from the State of Kansas, which will pay for 60-70 percent of the cost. The team’s lease at the Truman Sports Complex runs through the 2030 season, but a domed stadium should help attract a Super Bowl, Final Fours and other big events.
